Is Aging an Accident of Evolution? 0

Stuart Kim, PhD, Stanford University professor of developmental biology and genetics.

Prevailing theory of aging challenged by Stanford University Medical School researchers. Their discovery contradicts the prevailing theory that aging is a buildup of tissue damage similar to rust. The Stanford findings suggest specific genetic instructions drive the process. If they are right, science might one day find ways of switching the signals off and halting or even reversing aging.

“We were really surprised,” said Stuart Kim, who is the senior author of the research.

Kim’s lab examined the regulation of aging in C. elegans, a millimeter-long nematode worm whose simple body and small number of genes make it a useful tool for biologists. The worms age rapidly: their maximum life span is about two weeks. [more]

An Interesting read & some of the comments are rather entertaining. :)

DM-Spectrum 0

This is a trailer/music video for DM-Spectrum, A custom UT3 deathmatch level.

The initial concept for Spectrum was to subvert traditional deathmatch playstyles by forcing the player to use lights to navigate and kill enemies. The level is completely designed around this idea, thusly it has a fairly simple layout. There are 3 floors, the 2nd and 3rd floor open out onto the main hall in order for the coloured cubes to be easily visible for most of the time. Most of the walls are curved in order to help the player get out of trouble even if they are running directly into a wall. Every boundary has a smaller white light to signify it.

The cubes also serve a purpose. They help to keep the level paced. Each coloured cube represents a different area of the map. These areas are colour-co-ordinated to match the cubes. When a player is in one of these areas the corresponding cube lights up notifying other players. As one learns the map they should be able to find enemies without too much hardship.
This is my first map in UT3. In fact it’s the first level I have designed of any kind so it was a real learning experience. I would have liked to do more with it, turning down the player lighting drastically would be interesting. Also I had intended to add a REZ style layered soundtrack but was foiled by a lack of programming and UnrealEd knowledge. Maybe I will take some time to learn because I think it would have considerably added to the level. Subverting traditional playstyles further by forcing the player to use the audio to navigate.
